Response from Kerr

I am not a perfect man but I can say most of it is untrue. I pay my child
support and work every day to repair my relationship with my children.  Mine
has not been an easy life but through this mission I have healed myself and
am healing the hearts of souls of many.  It is not about me it is about the
kids...

Care to comment back?  If you want out now is the time

I went through a wicked divorce, I now pay my child support on time each and
every month.  There is no warrant it is old news.  The issue with the former
employer was a business issue and had nothing to do with my kids.  We
settled on the eight thousand dollar amount.

How much more do you want to know about my life?  I almost died once and it
changed my outlook on things.  Would you like to hear about that once we get
this done because right now I need to work on final details.

As to how reputable the reporter or paper is I would question that.  They
are a local smut paper selling porno and the like.

The paper or the reporter never contacted me at all.  I can post a statement
but I really don't think I need to.  There have been lots of good positive
stories but no one talks about those.  As to sponsors no one has pulled out
and more have come on board.  I am not a bad guy, I am trying to help
motivate the country to do the right thing.  People learn from their
mistakes and they can learn from mine.  Much like we did concerning our
mistakes about how we treated people like you and all our vets in the past.

Michael Scott Kerr Responds–Just Not to Us

In this week’s edition of the Weekly, I profiled Michael Scott Kerr, founder of the Snowball Express, an organization set up to help out the children and widows of soldiers who died in Iraq or Afghanistan. Great cause, sure, but we found out that Kerr doesn’t seem to care too much about his own children, owing around $49,000 in child support and having a Arizona child support arrest warrant in his name.

Kerr didn’t respond to our requests for an interview, but he did take the time to refute our article on The Sit and Spit, the blog of writer Karen Spears Zacharias. Good luck finding his response, though: it’s no longer there. But thanks to the miracle of Google, here’s Kerr’s response (second item down) and published in its entirety here:

“I went through a wicked divorce, I now pay my child support on time each and every month. There is no warrant it is old news. The issue with the former employer was a business issue and had nothing to do with my kids. We settled on the eight thousand dollar amount.”

More folo…

“The paper or the reporter never contacted me at all. I can post a statement but I really don’t think I need to. There have been lots of good positive stories but no one talks about those. As to sponsors no one has pulled out
and more have come on board. I am not a bad guy, I am trying to help motivate the country to do the right thing. People learn from their mistakes and they can learn from mine. Much like we did concerning our
mistakes about how we treated people like you and all our vets in the past.”

Fascinating response, considering:

1. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department’s website still lists an outstanding arrest warrant in Kerr’s name. We called the department verifying if the postings on this website are still valid; they say it’s updated every evening.

2. Kerr’s child support case on file with the State of Arizona shows he made his last payment in August of 2004. The total balance Kerr owes now exceeds $50,000.

3. The court docket for a case against Kerr filed by his former employer that he mentions specifically mentions child support as being part of the case (scroll to the bottom)

4. I did indeed contact Kerr for the story. Read my e-mail below:

Hello,

My name is Gustavo Arellano, and I’m a staff writer with OC Weekly. In doing research on Snowball Express, I found that a Michael Scott Kerr is wanted in Maricopa County for failing to pay child support:

http://www.mcso.org/submenu.asp?file=mostwanteddetail&recordid=13120

This same Michael Scott Kerr is also listed in the Maricopa County Superior Court website as once having a judgment filed against him by Equis Corporation, regarding child support as well.

My questions:

*Is this the same Michael Scott Kerr behind Snowball Express?
*If so, how can Mr. Kerr explain the child support arrest warrant and the Equis case?

I can be reached via e-mail at this address or by phone at 714-550-59**. If the Michael Scott Kerr in question is not the same Mr. Kerr behind Snowball Express, my apologies.

An e-mail sent to that address by our photo editor two days earlier was returned with a phone call by Kerr that very day.

We can go on about Kerr–and we will! Click here for the next post on Kerr!

Karen, I hope the rest of the world sees this reporter for who he is; a small, insignificant bottom feeder who is DYING to find a story, THE story, that will make him BIG. Well, he hit the dry well on this one and although he's tried, through ancient records and twistings of stories, to kick up a sand storm....he managed to only make a few sandparticles fly...

Michael Kerr and his Snowball Express people have gone above and beyond what we, widows from our most recent war, have been expecting. Truth is, the gift he is giving our children is so amazing we tend to lack words for it. This man and his organization has turned themselves inside and out to give our children something to fill the great void that they are experiencing every single day...

Karen, I have a feeling that you can easily go back in time and place yourself in our childrens' shoes...and while there, tell us how much an experience like this, a GIFT like this, would have meant to you. You can actually put words to the feelings of our young chidlren better than we can, and I am sure if you and I were talking right now, you'd tell me that what Michael Kerr and the Snowball Express is doing, is creating memories and giving joy to the Children of the Fallen where, well, there isn't too much joy today.

He is also helping us mothers out by letting us know that people care. People give selflessly of themselves to give OUR children something. Well, as a mother, I am speechless and grateful beyond words.

So, to Michael Kerr I would like to send a huge thank you, and to the sponsors of Snowball Express I'd like to say that what you are helping Michael achieve is absolutely priceless to us. And to the writer of the OC article....I wish you spend future energies and words to try and do good as opposed to chasing empty stories and aiming to hurt the Children of our Fallen. Star by looking up families in your own area and ask yourself how YOU, an American with FREE SPEECH, cam do something to H

Thanks for your comments. BTW: I have written about what I felt as a child. You can read about it in After the Flag has been Folded.
But back to Kerr and the OC article. I agree that what MK has done is remarkable and is a much-needed & appreciated acknowledgement for the children of the fallen.
However, as a journalist, I also believe that it was Kerr's responsiblity to be as forthright as possible about any hint of impropriety.
It is not okay for any father to shirk his responsbilities toward his children -- financial or otherwise.
The reporter has not done a disservice. The reporter has done his job. More than one individual over the years -- including in my mother's era-- have taken advantage of widows & children of war.
I'm not saying that's what Kerr has done. I am just saying that Kerr has a responsiblity to answer these allegations and to be accountable to those donors who have made Snowball Express possible.
The attack on the journalist is uncalled for -- it is through people like this journalist that we are able to maintain accountability in this society.
Freedom of the press was one of those rights our loved ones died for. Let's not slay the messenger but rather carefully weigh the news and then look for truth in it all.
Michael has admitted that he's done some things wrong in all of this. I suspect that's his way of saying he wasn't always the father he should have been to his own children.
His first responsibility -- as is mine -- is to his own children.

Karen, I agree, shooting the messenger might be a bit too harsh, but I also think that as a reporter, aiming to sell his paper, he should at least at a very minimum check ALL SIDES of the story before he decided it was OK to hang Michael Kerr out to be a dead beat dad and wanted fugitive. There is nothing noble in reporting a story like that, and again, only adds on to the negative press we, as Families of the Fallen, already bear the brunt of every single day...

It would be nice if instead we read reports on the other side, the less selling side, of all this... The fact that many positive things also happen. Stories worth reporting in my book, but true, a less 'seeling' angle. As it is today, negativity feeds negativity, and it would be worth while for all around moral in our country to start focusing on the positives a little more.

And really, the one sided story of a sad, broken family as it was reported by the OC journalist, has little to nothing to do with the Snowball Express. As far as I know today, Michael Kerr has taken care of his own family problems, he displays only commitment, love and affection for his children, and he is now reaching out to children across the country who have lost their mom or dad. I wish the reporter would have focused on THAT as opposed to, for all involved, a very tragic but personal family event that took place 5+ years ago.

All my best,
Sara.

Computer records still show an outstanding balance on child support.
Michael says he's taking care of this, but we have no way of verifying that at this point.
It would be interesting to know what Michael's older children would have to say.

I have to agree with Sara Clark 100%. Yes, the reporter has the right to report and yes, he has a right to his freedom of speech, but he made it very clear with his actions and how he wrote the story that his story was more sensational journalism than factual journalism. And because of his actions and how he chose to go about writing that article he lost the respect from many families of the fallen.

He had other choices on how to write his article and he could have easily contacted Michael Kerr to get his side of the story. The reporter chose NOT to do this and I question why he didn’t. It is not up to us to judge Michael Kerr and make assumptions about him based on this article. It’s extremely sad that this article (if you can even call it that), has been forwarded to others via the internet.

Why would Michael Kerr feel obligated to tell anyone about this? This is something from his past and from his personal life? That’s his business and not ours. Although none of us asked him to, Michael Kerr has responded. We stand by him, his family and the Snowball Express.

Life is way to short to focus on sensational journalism. Instead I will focus on the positives that Michael Kerr and Snowball Express are promoting with this weekend’s events for our children. If there are people who still have doubts…than maybe they shouldn’t take part in the wonderful and amazing events that Snowball Express is putting on for the children of our fallen heroes.

I am befuddled by the comments that challenge this journalist. I worked as a reporter for 10 years and never once, not once, did I make a decision to do a story based on what sells papers. And neither did any reporter I ever worked with. I don't know this journalist but I do know some things about the process and I can assure you that Gustavo cannot put into an article that MK couldn't be reached for comment unless he had made effort to contact MK in the first place. I once had a Superintendent of a school accuse me of false reporting and he called a meeting of teachers telling them that I had never asked for his input. When the truth was I had an hour long meeting with him in which he refused to answer questions. I don't know for sure how big an effort Gustavo made to get ahold of Kerr, but I know that he could not say that Kerr couldn't be reached for comment unless he did try to reach Kerr.
The reason Michael ought to have felt obligated to respond to this -- or to own it in the first place is because it is a criminal offense. Ask yourself for a moment how your own child would feel if you were spending all your time and money on the kid next door, and not them?
And, one more thing I know for sure. This reporter did not sit in his desk and say, Boyohboy, how can I get some dirt on Michael Kerr? What likely happened is someone who knew about these past offenses called the reporter, who then followed up and then wrote the story.
Listen, I'm not saying Michael isn't doing a good job on Snowball Express and I have gone out on a limb, way out, and put my name and crediblity in both the media market and in the veteran/widow community on this effort. I still believe in the mission of Snowball Express. But I don't think having a mission in one area of your life negates responsibilites in the other areas. If anything it calls us to a higher standard.

Below is the defintion of the OC Weekly. After reading the definition of this so called newspaper... Well, lets just say that I think the definition speaks for itself. It's purely sensational journalism and laughable...I can't imagine who would even believe the stuff they write in there. Thanks, but no thanks...I'll stick to reading real newspapers, with real articles, with real reporters...

Maybe there is a reason it's free...

OC Weekly
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
OC Weekly, a sister publication of both LA Weekly and The Village Voice, is a free weekly paper (an alternative weekly) distributed in Orange County, California and also in Long Beach. Its political coverage is generally liberal.[citation needed] The paper has strong coverage of the follies and foibles of local politicians from both political parties, but especially local Republicans. It routinely criticizes George W. Bush and local Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona.[citation needed] It also carries liberal cartoons, such as Tom Tomorrow's "This Modern World." Two of the OC Weekly's most popular local columns are "¡Ask a Mexican!" by Gustavo Arellano, which is now in syndication, and "Commie Girl" by Rebecca Schoenkopf, which is a mixture of nightlife, politics, hard-drinking and cussing.

It can be picked up in many coffee shops, bookstores, convenience stores, etc. Other businesses, however, do not carry the paper because of its somewhat racy nature and political views (Orange County is a generally conservative county).

The OC Weekly takes pride in its art and entertainment listings for both Orange and Los Angeles counties, rivaling the much larger Orange County Register and Los Angeles Times.

Since the OC Weekly is a free paper, it must rely upon its advertising revenue. Besides their ads for hip clothing stores, restaurants and nightclubs are ones for cosmetic surgery, erotica and escort services.

Sort of ironic that you are trashing a "free" newspaper, funded totally by advertisers, in defense of a "free" program, funded by corporate sponsors.

Let me state again for the record that I believe in the mission of Snowball Express and have supported and will continue to support that mission. But I still maintain that because of the nature of non-profits, it's imperative that there be fiscal accountablity. Not paying child support is a criminally negligent act that indicates a lack of fiscal responsibility. Michael says he's addressed this and corrected it.

Just my 2 cents......BUT I am one of the women who has children and is going on the SBE trip to LA. My question is this... What if the article IS true? How are we going to feel that this man won't take care of his own children but wants to take care of our children? Now I'm not saying it's all true, I have no clue. I pray that it's all in the past and the reporter is reporting on past circumstances.....but tell me how are we gonna feel if it's all recent?

Rachelle, how "free" does the Snowball Express weekend feel to you?

I am sure everyone is aware that in order to be eligible for this "free" event, we have all had to pay a VERY HIGH PRICE. Not a day, for the rest of our lives, will we forget about that.

I was simply writing here since the ease to trash Michael Kerr came in full force, and this just in listening to ONE side of that story. Again, I don't think Michael Kerr's personal life, one he swears he is taking responsibility for, should have any bearing or concern to the people involved in the Snowball Express organization, whether you are on the volunteering end or receiving end of it all.

Rachelle, all my love to you and your beautiful children.

On Saturday, we were sent faxes with disturbing information on Michael Kerr including an article that was published in a newspaper called "The Orange County Weekly titled "A Snow Job Success"
This is a link to the article:
http://www.ocweekly.com/news/news/a-snow-job-success/26318/

We are very concerned and need you to answer questions after repeated attempts.

MilitaryConnection.com has provided a great deal of pro bono resources and services toward this event because we are committed to helping the spouses and children of fallen soldiers and the military community. We helped get out the word to those who eligible by sending out over 50,000 press releases to organizations as well as obtaining articles in military base newspapers. We have put our good name out there. We brought on Amy Walker-Davis of Meeting Site Solutions who secured hundreds of free hotel rooms for spouses and children.

We paid for a full web national release to get out the word so those who can come would be cognizant of the events. We have fielded and paid for hundreds of phone calls. We have spent a great deal of time and effort on this project as have many other organizations. Everyone wants to do good for these families.

When I asked Michael Kerr very basic due diligence questions, he not only stonewalled me but went on the attack against me and MilitaryConnection.com. I have received calls and emails providing documentation of this. Mr. Kerr also has made threats to say negative things about us at the event. Why? Because we have been asking questions. I guess the best defense is a good offense and this has been the case with Mr. Kerr.

Michael, perhaps you might be willing to answer these questions on this blog.

Why do widows and children have to sign off an Irrevocable Photographic Release for you to use their photographic images video and/or audio recordings that can be for any purpose? This is not consistent with respecting their privacy as you assured

Thanks for your comments, but I don't agree with them. If the accussations are true, and it appears that some of them are, wouldn't the best thing for all involved be for MK to step aside and allow someone else to head up the weekend? There is confirmation with the Sheriff's department that the warrant (civil, not criminal) remains current and that the balance is still owing. Moreover, some widows & children have not yet rec'd their plane tickets. And, Snowball Express is NOT currently registered as a charitable organization in the State of California. Meaning contributions are NOT tax-deductible. FYI: for-profit organizations are not held to the same standards of accountability.

Wow. Just wow. I can't believe that so many would apologize so fiercely over something like this. It taints the name of the charity, does that concern no one?

The OC Weekly reporter gave more than enough information to at least question the integrity of the man behind Snowball Express. It's not a mistake made in his past. The man owes FIFTY THOUSAND dollars in back child support, and a WARRANT FOR HIS ARREST is active in the State of Arizona, easily found by looking on their website, which is update daily.

As for complaints about doing it in a negative way. Huh? How come no complaints about the fact that Michael Kerr has apparently neglected to care for his children in such an egregious manner that a warrant has been issued for his arrest?

Newspapers can't report news that doesn't exist -- all ire should be directed at the source of this "negativity." Namely, Michael Kerr.

As for the "one-sidedness" of the story: Did you all read the whole thing? Gustavo attemtped to contact Kerr and even printed the e-mail he sent to show that he did. If the story is one-sided, that is also Kerr's fault.

Snowball Express is a wonderful thing, but I don't think it earns Kerr a free pass on misdeeds. If anything, it holds him to a higher standard. I thank the reporter for daring to look deeper and bringing us the truth. When deciding where to send my charitable dollars, I feel the organizer's background is of utmost importance.

In reference to Ray Sandford's posting:
Ray owns the Snowball Express domain and may be a little to close to Michael Kerr to look objectively at issues.

Michael Kerr in my opinion is a bully and his horrific treatment of Karen Zacharias clearly demonstrates that this is about him and not the families. Karen is the daughter of a fallen soldier from Vietnam and has lived what these families are going through. She was instrumental in bringing aboard TAPS to help tend to the emotional needs of these families. No one understands better than someone like Karen who has been there herself. Karen also flew out at her own expense to be there for many of the widows. However, this is not important to Michael Kerr and he wants her out. The rooms at the hotels were donated because MilitaryConnection.com brought on board our collegues who obtained the rooms along with John. They did such a good job that Snowball gave back hundreds of rooms so this is a non-issue. I want everyone to know that Michael Kerr banned Karen from the Oakley event and whatever else he can because of her opinions of him. He thinks she badmouthed him to widows. This is not true but SO WHAT? (I thought that this was not about Kerr). I beleive that Oakley needs to apologize to Karen. I have sent an email to Al Krueger there and will contact others about what Kerr did to Karen.

There was quite an article on Kerr today in the LA Times where he blames all of his problems on being addicted to drugs. I believe that Michael is very good at not taking responsibility for his actions. It seems that Michael is a drug addict by his own admission in the article. What else will we find out? Is this the type of man that should be around other people's kids when he doesn't make his own a priority per the article? We asked questions and he has been attacking me and MilitaryConnection.com too as well as banning us from the events after we provided many resources too.

Mr. Kerr did something wonderful, the fact that he has not always taken care of his personal responsibilities is sad, but has nothing to do with Snowball Express. The joy these children had should be all you people talk about, instead, you are focused on the sad and tortured past of the founder. Who cares? I don't care. I only care if he is acting with integrity now.

This man had a marriage fail, he was involved in drugs and had financial problems, it sounds like half the people you hear about ... if not drugs-alcohol, or Lexapro ... this man is clearly working toward a better future, for himself, his family and the military families. Wow, Karen, you of all people should honor that. You are not helping your own cause. Who else will sponsor an event like this now? They would be reluctant to organize any kind of military support event, for fear their past, present and intent are examined until something dirty is discovered. It's just really very sad, that we, as a people, can't forgive the sins of others, and applaud their good in this world. We are all motivated by different things. I just think it's wrong to judget this man's moral character, he's shown no malace toward any one of us nor toward the fund to which his passion drives. Karen, with all due respect, these misives from you are not all true. But, the sadest thing is you can't see the real story here -- the real good. More people should show generous hearts to our troops. How sad that this man's past is distracting you.

You make some valid points. More people should be appreciative, not only of our troops, but of the sacrifices the families make.
And, yes, I of all people should be sensitive to a person's past mistakes. I've made plenty of them. All documented, I might add.
Snowball Express was a great event. I am not taking away from that. But the problem I have, continue to have it not Kerr's past activity but his present activity. He lied to me when I asked him outright about Gustavo's article. Moreover, he has a pattern of lying and that concerns me. Additionally, I heard stories from other widows about Kerr exploiting them and, even one widow who claimed he took money right out of her hand. Now either she's lying or he's lying. I choose to believe her over him, given my recent dealings with Kerr.
Listen, my only interest in this matter is because I watch many men exploit my mother after my father's death, and I don't want to see that repeated with this generation of war widows. That's all. Nothing more.
