I just finished watching Diana Sawyer's interview with Jenna Bush. Did you see it? I must say I was impressed. If I were Laura and George I'd be busting my buttons. Jenna provides a stark contrast to the other celebrity girls her age -- Britany, Paris, Lindsay. I was surprised at how many of her mother's mannerisms she's picked up. That little nod, and quick smile. And as Sawyer pointed out, "an exuberance for life."
My favorite moment during the interview was when Jenna told Sawyer that she's been to Walter Reed with her father, and witnessed how the deaths in Iraq affect him. "One night, Barbara and I were joking with him about him being grumpy, then he got up to go to the bathroom or something and Mom told us that he'd just learned about a helicopter crash in Iraq...."
Okay. Yes, I do like knowing that Bush is paying attention to the growing causality list, but what I loved about Jenna's comments was her remark "He got up to go to the bathroom or something..."
Don't you know George looked at Laura and rolled his eyes when that hit the airwaves. Kind of reminds me of the day the librarian hunted me down in the bathroom in Bend.
The most difficult moment of the interview? When Jenna recounted the story of her engagement. Apparently Henry asked her to marry him during a sunrise hike, atop a mountain. Jenna noted that her mother and her sister helped Henry with the ring, that they knew he was going to pop the question. Jenna said she had no idea he was going to propose but after he did, she called her sister and they both cried. Jenna said Henry has accepted that she is a twin and that Barbara is always going to be a big part of their lives.
Shelby, who was watching the show with me, turned and said, "Now that does upset me." She's still smarting from choices that have left her feeling excluded. I heard someone say that a mother is only as happy as her unhappiest child. True. So true.
It's not easy raising kids to care -- about themselves, about each other and about the global community.
I don't often agree with George W. Bush, but I do admire that he and Laura have raised Jenna up to be such a delightful soul. I'm going to read her book, Ana's Story. And if Jenna ever runs for office, she's got my vote.
Hilary ought to study that interview for tips on how to disarm her critics.
